Jurgen Klopp’s agent’s claims must be the final ghost of the Ineos panic era at Man Utd

Jurgen Klopp’s agent Marc Kosicke made waves recently by claiming Man Utd approached his client for the job, but Ineos’ denial of the same should exorcise the final ghost of their panic era.

Manchester United are still far from certain about where their managerial search leads them, but Michael Carrick is at least a calm before the storm of the summer.

Fans could get used to this, having been in the middle of another storm before Carrick, as Ruben Amorim’s era failed, and another storm before Amorim, as Erik ten Hag suffered in uncertainty.

Are you happy with Ineos and Sir Jim Ratcliffe?

Amidst all these waves of instability, the claims of Jurgen Klopp’s agent don’t look so false anymore, but at the same time, Ineos’ denial speaks volumes about where they see the club now.

Man Utd deny Jurgen Klopp contact

United’s interest in Klopp isn’t new, as Ed Woodward is now (in)famous for pitching Old Trafford to him as an “Adult version of Disneyland”.

Needless to say, that pitch did not work, and the “what if” feeling became strong as Klopp restored United’s biggest rivals to a position of strength in England and Europe.

That should have firmly ruled him out of the running for ever getting the United job, but Ineos were hardly known for being stable when they arrived.

Therefore, when Klopp’s agent, Marc Kosicke, recently said that United and Chelsea inquired about Klopp’s availability after he left Liverpool, it was more believable than not.

Ultimately, United denied those claims almost immediately, but the crux of this story isn’t in a “he said, they said” narrative.

It lies deeper in the fact that for Ineos, this must be the final ghost of their panic era at Old Trafford.

Klopp’s claims are a ghost of Ineos’ panic era

It started with Ineos rocking up at Old Trafford and immediately casting doubt on the future of Erik ten Hag.

Prove me wrong: Michael Carrick has already shown enough to become permanent Man United manager.

13 points from 15 would be title winning form over a full season…

The Dutchman was as good as gone before a win in the FA Cup final swayed Ineos, and they extended his contract for another season, but not before interviewing every manager on earth, quite publicly.

Three months into the season, he was fired, and they committed to a Ruben Amorim project, which crashed and burned in 14 months.

It’s clear to see from the timeline above how Klopp’s claims fit in there somewhere, because Ineos were in utter disarray at panic stations from the moment they walked through the doors of United.

That panic has only just subsided, albeit temporarily, as Carrick has brought calmness and stability to a chaotic situation in just five games.

Denying Klopp’s claims isn’t the point. United might as well have contacted him after he left Liverpool, because it looked like nobody at the club knew what they were doing.

What’s important is that Ineos must make sure claims like these are ghosts of the past, as they signify an era of panic and confusion at Old Trafford.

Whether it’s by trusting Carrick or having a coherent succession plan, United can’t afford any more mistakes for the manager’s seat.

Klopp’s claims aren’t the problem, and United’s denial isn’t a solution. Both are a symptom of the Ineos’ panic era problem.
