Manchester United’s U18 side beat Liverpool on Wednesday afternoon, with the win secured by Jay McEvoy, who showcased his goalscoring ability again right in front of Michael Carrick.
Darren Fletcher had his U18 side back at full strength this week to face Liverpool, and Manchester United romped to a 4-1 win at a sunny Carrington.
It was the kind of performance that has made the U18s a must-watch for the past three seasons, with Jay McEvoy one of the stars of the show from midfield, along with JJ Gabriel, as usual, putting himself into the headlines after a quiet opening 65 minutes.
Gabriel scored twice for United vs Liverpool, in the win, but the three points were already won thanks to McEvoy’s first-half brace.

Will Michael Carrick crown number 259 before this season ends?🤔

Jay McEvoy’s goalscoring sets him apart from Manchester United teammates
McEvoy has been superb for United at an U18 level lately, showcasing how rounded his game is.
At just 17, McEvoy has Roy Keane-esque tackling, silky passing like Xavi Hernandez, and ball-carrying. Recently, he has also showcased his goalscoring ability.
In February, McEvoy scored twice for United against West Brom, and he has now done the same against Liverpool.
Both goals were excellent for the midfielder, with strong finishes as he moved forward into the box. But against Liverpool, Michael Carrick was watching on.
Standing on the sideline, Carrick will have seen McEvoy’s midfield quality, but also won’t have been able to ignore the goal-scoring quality that the Irish youngster has.
The goals set McEvoy apart from the other academy midfielders, with promotion of at least one expected for next season in the midfield reshuffle.

With the World Cup this summer, pre-season will have plenty of academy involvement🔮
Jay McEvoy can’t be forgotten by Manchester United
This summer, United are expected to promote an academy midfielder to help rebuild the department alongside a couple of new signings.
McEvoy is one of the best talents United have in the position, despite being considered slightly behind the others, such as Jim Thwaites right now.
However, the 17-year-old has excellent qualities and is improving throughout the campaign, and will continue to next season.
So, in the race for United to find the perfect academy talent to promote, McEvoy cannot be forgotten. But his goals certainly mean that he won’t be.
