James Scanlon could be Man Utd’s tour 2024 wildcard, he has what it takes

One of the surprise inclusions of the 2024 Manchester United tour squad was James Scanlon, but he could prove to be the wild card.

Manchester United have taken 12 exciting youngsters on the tour this summer, and while some are more notable than others, each is there on merit and has a real chance to play their way into the first team.

Harry Amass, Ethan Wheatley, Toby Collyer and Maxi Oyedele are just some of the names fans will be excited to see taking on elite opposition over the next few weeks.

But one name who the praise is a lot quieter for is James Scanlon with the history-making 17-year-old potentially ready to make a statement.

After an excellent 2023/24, Scanlon’s place on tour is much deserved. But what can we expect to see from him on tour?

James Scanlon could be Manchester United’s wildcard

Scanlon might not get the press than the Shea Laceys, Amir Ibragimovs or Bendito Mantatos of Carrington get, but he’s every bit as likely to make an impact at the club and could be worth as much as Omari Kellyman if he gets his chance.

The teenager is already a full international for Gibraltar, a history maker in being so as he’s the first United player to represent Gibraltar.

The four-cap forward had a lightning-hot 2023/24 campaign for the United U18s. This saw him score eight times and assist three times in just 12 outings in the treble-winning U18 PL campaign.

U21 looked a stroke too far for him last season, but he’s definitely got everything needed to reach the desired level. Which is why this summer is a golden chance as he could prove himself as a back-up in the absence of both Alejandro Garnacho on the wings and Bruno Fernandes in attacking midfield.

If called upon, he could end up being a real wildcard for Ten Hag. An excellent option who could surprise everyone and force himself into the conversations of a competitive first-team debut.

What Scanlon is like as a player

Despite his youthful age, when appearing for the U18s last season Scanlon always played with a maturity that set him apart from his teammates.

A skilful and silky dribbler, Scanlon is less of a speedster on the wing but rather uses excellent ball control and technical ability to make himself a threat when cutting inside.

He’s both creative and also a dangerous finisher who can create magic from nothing and if he’s given a chance this is how we’d expect him to shine.

We can’t imagine Scanlon will be getting countless minutes for Manchester United during pre-season, but we back him to take any opportunity he’s granted.
