It’s so obvious who Man Utd’s first signing should be if they hire Thomas Tuchel as their next manager

Thomas Tuchel is likely to be one of the top contenders to become the next Manchester United manager, and if he arrives, his first signing is surely already nailed on.

Ruben Amorim was sacked by Manchester United earlier this week, with a complete disintegration behind the scenes causing this.

The club are looking to appoint a caretaker manager until May, before the permanent successor will be named after the conclusion of the 2025/26 season.

David Ornstein has claimed Thomas Tuchel is a serious contender for United, with the German only available once England’s World Cup campaign ends.

Paul Scholes also picked Tuchel as his top choice, predicting that he would get the best out of the current players at Old Trafford.

If he is chosen, Tuchel would surely want one signing to be made.

Thomas Tuchel would surely want Elliot Anderson at Manchester United

For many, Tuchel would be the ideal new manager, with the pedigree needed to take charge of United.

However, he would have a list of demands for Ineos to take the role, which would include being backed and that could mean signing a top class midfielder.

In this case, Elliot Anderson would surely be the name he is demanding.

Tuchel is currently Anderson’s international manager for England, and has been using the Nottingham Forest star regularly.

Speaking about Anderson to BBC Sport in November, Tuchel was glowing about his talents, and if given a choice of United’s current top midfield targets, Anderson would be number one.

“Anderson is a key player for us at the moment,” said Tuchel. “He is one of the best midfielders in the Premier League – that’s why he is with us and starting for us.

“He deserves it because he has been nothing but impressive. He has to keep on going now though. He is a very complete and mobile midfielder, and that’s what he keeps showing me.”

Ineos met with Tuchel in 2024 but it was handled poorly by the club. But offering to sign him Anderson might be a real sweetener.

Big battle expected next summer for Elliot Anderson

Signing Anderson will be no easy feat for Manchester United in 2026, and it will require hiring the right manager and also securing European football this season.

Now, Fabrizio Romano has issued an update, predicting that there will be a massive race for Anderson.

“I think it’s going to be a big battle. But at the moment, what I can say is that Man United, for sure, have mentioned his name several times internally, and so I expect them to be serious contenders at the table.”

Anderson is exactly what United need in midfield regardless of who the next manager is.

United as a club want to sign Anderson, which won’t change with Amorim gone. But the next manager will likely have a say and Tuchel would pick Anderson.
