Ineos sent the same three-word demand to secure their two most important deals, it’s a clear reset

Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos have now been at the helm of Manchester United for more than a year now and the revolution at the club is already palpable.

Not all the changes pioneered by Ineos have been welcomed, as is expected, but the intent, direction, and vision for the club is clearer than it ever was under the Glazers.

That change is already visible in the transfer strategy, with a focus on developing for the future leading Ineos to sign wonderkids by the bucketloads, even for the first team, in the case of Ayden Heaven.

However, perhaps the most important change is a cultural one that is not immediately visible to the naked eye like a transfer, but it rearing its head in Ineos’ three-word message to secure the signature of Ruben Amorim and Patrick Dorgu.

Ineos’ message to Ruben Amorim and Patrick Dorgu

Ineos‘ time at Manchester United has seen a lot of decisions but the two monumental ones that can sum up the direction the club is going under them are two.

First was the signing of Ruben Amorim who became Ineos’ first managerial appointment, and the second was the signing of Patrick Dorgu.

Dorgu became the first genuine first-team addition to the Man Utd squad under Ruben Amorim, a sign that Ineos are now all-in on the wing-back system.

One is a managerial appointment and the other is a player signing but look under the surface and there’s a common denominator about how the club secured them. Have a look at the two quotes below-

Amorim said on his decision to join: “I never discussed anything with the [Sporting] president. For three days I said I wanted to stay until the end of the season, but then I was told it was not possible. It was now or never, or Manchester would go for another option.”

Lecce president Sticchi Damiani said about Dorgu’s transfer: “The English communicated to us their desire, the club, and its coach, to be immediate. There was an ultimatum, now or never, also giving this message to the player himself.”

The common thread is clear – you shouldn’t wait to join Man Utd because Man Utd doesn’t wait for you. They both were told in no uncertain terms that it was “now or never”.

Cultural shift from Glazer era

United were infamous for dithering and being indecisive over what they wanted to do, leading to some truly panicky and ill-advised decisions.

It is a breath of fresh air to see a regime that is not only clear in what it wants but has the clarity of thought to put a deadline on decisions until they move on to their second option.

That way of working has is bound to pay dividends eventually, if not immediately, and in Dorgu’s signing, it already has.

Napoli and Juventus would have entered the sweepstakes in the summer and even for Amorim, another sparkling season with Sporting might have put him on the radar of the other clubs.

“Now or never” is how a club the size of Man Utd should operate. Its return was long overdue.
