Ineos dodged £60m striker deal last summer and it now looks like a masterstroke

Manchester United’s search for a new striker in the summer ended with the signing of Benjamin Sesko, but it was nearly very different.

The £66 million signing of Benjamin Sesko is one that Ineos will look back on with confidence given the Slovenian’s impressive debut season.

Sesko pushed to join United over other clubs, and he has netted 10 goals in his first season with the Red Devils.

But United were in talks with Nicolas Jackson and nearly made a move for the Chelsea forward. Instead, he ended up joining Bayern Munich.

Man Utd successfully dodged Nicolas Jackson deal

There were reports in the summer that Jackson was available for £60m, and United seemed to be leading the race for his signature at one point.

However, Jackson joined Bayern on loan with an option to make his move permanent for £70 million in the upcoming summer window.

According to Florian Plettenberg, though, Jackson is set to leave Bayern this summer, as the German giants do not want to sign him permanently.

Jackson has only scored nine goals in 28 appearances for Bayern this season. His latest goal came in the 4-2 win over Stuttgart which confirmed that Bayern are the champions of the Bundesliga.

Ineos made the right decision with Benjamin Sesko

Jackson may have looked appealing in the summer as a Premier League-proven signing, but Ineos took a risk on Sesko and it has paid off.

Sesko is two years younger than Jackson, who is 24 years old, and he also has superior physical attributes in terms of pace and height.

Perhaps more importantly, though, is that Sesko has an elite mentality and staff and players have been full of praise for his attitude and desire to improve.

That is exactly the kind of player that United need for their long-term project, and Sesko appears to be a great fit.

Jackson being sent back to Chelsea shows that Bayern did not see enough value in him to keep him around at a top club, and that is all that United needed to know to feel justified in their decision to dodge his signature.
