The pre-season is a time for bold predictions, but rarely does anyone make a prediction that’s not just bold for the club, but also something that has never happened before in the league’s history.
Therefore, when I was asked to make a bold prediction and said Bruno Fernandes would break the Premier League assist record, eyebrows were raised.
By then, Amorim had already settled Fernandes into a deeper midfield role, making it even harder for that statement to come true.
However, the reasoning I gave back then is exactly the one Fernandes gave upon breaking the record.
Look under the surface, and that prediction wasn’t even that bold. Fernandes has always been the league’s best creator.

What changed this season is that those chances fell to a competent forward line instead of a struggling one, and the result is in front of our eyes.
The set-piece mastery helped, but Fernandes’ shifting to a creative role was always going to happen with so much firepower in the squad.
If anything, his assist to Patrick Dorgu on the final day of the season proved that this record isn’t even reliant on Casemiro.
Fernandes is just that good with chance-creation that as long as someone tucks them away, he’ll always be there and thereabouts on the assist charts.
It can be argued that Fernandes would have finished the season with 25+ assists had his teammates not lost their shooting boots near the end of the season.
At this point, the biggest threat to the record he has set is himself next season. With a competent midfield behind him, expect him to wreak havoc in the final third and go close again.
So then, next season’s prediction – Bruno Fernandes to break his own record for most assists in the Premier League season?
