Gabby Agbonlahor overlooks most important part of Bruno Fernandes’ spell at Man Utd, it sets him apart from others

Gabby Agbonlahor’s clear-cut point about Bruno Fernandes’ time at Old Trafford is disregarding an impressive achievement that the Manchester United captain will have attained.

Bruno Fernandes is arguably Manchester United’s best signing since legendary former manager Sir Alex Ferguson bowed out of Old Trafford in 2013.

United signed Fernandes from Sporting CP in 2020 for an initial fee of £47m and the 30-year-old Portuguese midfielder has had a sensational impact at the Red Devils.

Fernandes has remained a key United first-team player and the Red Devils skipper has continued to produce for the Premier League club season after season.

The United captain has been met with criticism when his form has fallen off, but Fernandes has always fought back and hit back at his critics with his performances.

Fernandes ascended to the United captaincy under former Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag and retained the armband under current United manager Ruben Amorim.

Ruben Amorim has already highlighted the importance of the Portugal international in his first-team squad and Fernandes inked a new United contract last summer.

What did Gabby Agbonlahor say about Man Utd captain Bruno Fernandes and his impressive spell at Old Trafford?

Bruno Fernandes, who is under contract with Manchester United until 2027, has scored 95 times and registered 82 assists in 278 matches for the Red Devils.

The United star has seen a turnaround in form in recent weeks and Fernandes has scored 16 times and registered 16 assists in 45 matches in the 2024-25 campaign.

The Red Devils have struggled in the aftermath of Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement as United manager and Fernandes has only two trophies to his name at Old Trafford.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Aston Villa legend Gabby Agbonlahor claimed that United skipper Fernandes has “wasted” the prime of his career during his spell at the club.

“He’s 31 in September,” he said.

“And if he retired next season and didn’t win anything this season, he could retire or leave Manchester United with one FA Cup and one Carabao Cup.

“I think he’s actually wasted his best years at Manchester United, even if they win the Europa League.”

What Gabby Agbonlahor fails to see in the bigger picture for Bruno Fernandes at Man Utd

Fernandes continues to remain an influential force at Old Trafford and he remains an important part of Ruben Amorim’s plans for United going forward.

If United manager Amorim is able to implement his project at the Red Devils, then Fernandes could see his silverware haul bolstered long before his Old Trafford exit.

Fernandes has already shown his incredible brilliance as an individual player, including by winning United’s Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award.

Despite the lack of silverware right now, Agbonlahor has completely missed the point about one of the rare feats that Fernandes will have when he leaves United.

Fernandes will no doubt be one of the few United players in the post-Ferguson era of signings who will be seen as a club legend at Old Trafford after his spell is done.
