Things are about to change at Manchester United and despite Ruud van Nistelrooy’s sterling interim period, that change is long overdue.
With Ruben Amorim, Ineos will finally have their own man in their own structure and the hope will be that this doesn’t turn out to be another false dawn due to those factors.
The scrutiny at Manchester United is fierce, and Amorim already has a strategy to deal with some challenges but the job is titanic.
Fortunately for him, he is no longer walking into a club in crisis and free fall after Van Nistelrooy’s time in charge. That’s not the only positive, however, as the chips are falling into place at just the right time for the new manager, something which Erik ten Hag could have done with!

Erik ten Hag’s dream Man Utd scenario
The summer window, unlike the previous ones, can’t be criticised because the thought process behind every signing was sound and made sense.
Gaps were filled with precision and potential and the hope was that Ten Hag would go into the season armed with the necessary personnel to improve the club’s fortunes.

However, either some players didn’t find any form, some struggled to adapt, some were injured, and some just looked plain disinterested.
Ten Hag had his imprints all over the summer business with Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui, especially, former Ajax players.
Mazraoui was the one who held the fort together under Ten Hag as well but what would have been Ten Hag’s dream scenario- a partnership of Lisandro Martinez and De Ligt, turned into a nightmare quickly.
Through form and fitness, things reached such a head that Ten Hag dropped the duo entirely from the first XI vs Aston Villa in a league game, going with Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans instead.
However, after four games under Ruud van Nistelrooy, they can count themselves amongst the players whose fortunes have changed.
Amad is the undeniable Man Utd undroppable now, but De Ligt has also impressed recently and admitted he’s getting into a rhythm now.
Alongside Martinez, things are starting to click and the partnership on which Ten Hag would have wanted his team to build is instead flourishing after his exit. It’s unfortunate for the Dutchman but extremely good for the new man.
Ruben Amorim will benefit immensely
Amorim has already revealed his starting tactical plan for Man Utd and if that is any indication, he can use all the centre-backs and then some!
For De Ligt, the fit is clear. He will play the Ousmane Diomande role of the middle centre-back in a three who moves up regularly to form a passing triangle with the two midfielders ahead of him.
For Lisandro Martinez, the fit is seamless as well. As the left-sided centre-back, he can support the flying wingback and create overloads on that side or break defensive lines with progressive passing.
Playing in a three instead of a traditional back four will also allow De Ligt’s weaknesses to get covered up, like defending in space or running towards his own goal.
At their best, a trio of De Ligt-Martinez-Leny Yoro is as perfect as a trio can be for a back three under Amorim. Two of those were signed by Ten Hag to play as a pair but they never found form until he left.
The third, Yoro, couldn’t play under him at all and is expected back fit for Amorim’s first game in charge vs Ipswich on November 24.
It’s a cruel turn of events for Ten Hag, but one which Amorim will benefit immensely from!
