Ruben Amorim didn’t have the toughest acts to follow at Manchester United in terms of optics because Erik ten Hag had become so deeply unpopular.

Erik ten Hag crashed and burned by the end of his tenure, just waiting to be put out of his misery at a job that was going nowhere.

However, Ruben Amorim’s arrival and his subsequent failure to improve things (probably deteriorated further) has had Man Utd fans see Ten Hag’s tenure in a new light, even though his mistakes were plenty.

Amorim will still be vindicated in the sense that Ten Hag has now made the choice that was taken out of his hands by Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

Erik ten Hag makes Ruben Amorim’s ideal choice

When Amorim walked through the doors of Old Trafford, he made no effort to hide the fact that he wasn’t coming in at the ideal time.

More than the team struggling, he revealed that he had requested Ineos and Sir Jim Ratcliffe to delay his appointment until the end of the season.

Omar Berrada and Co told him in no uncertain terms that it was now or never, a tactic they would repeat with Patrick Dorgu’s transfer.

Faced with the opportunity of a lifetime, Amorim jumped ship in the middle of the season and his worst fears were realised as the team is a chaotic mess trying to shift from one system to another while learning on the job during matches.

It seems like Ten Hag has been listening to Amorim’s travails as he’s made the decision to put off joining a new club until the start of the new season.

Ten Hag will prove himself elsewhere

Ten Hag has been linked to Feyenoord and Borussia Dortmund, among others, for the head coach job but approaching his new path with clarity will stand him in good stead.

By now, the footballing world has also woken up to the fact that no player or staff can be judged by what happens to them at Old Trafford.

There’s something very wrong with the culture itself that doesn’t allow talent to flourish to its maximum level, something which Ten Hag can attest to.

Even Amorim can’t have turned into an incompetent coach overnight because he was Europe’s hottest coaching sensation when he was at Sporting literally four months ago.

In a cruel way, Amorim’s struggles have ensured Ten Hag’s coaching stock hasn’t cratered and sets him up to prove himself at his next job. He’s already been in the United cauldron which looks like the impossible job as it stands.
