Chido Obi has just been handed a golden chance to truly break out at Man Utd as stars align

When Manchester United signed Chido Obi in the summer of 2024 they wouldn’t have thought he’d get the chance to become a bonafide first-team player so soon but that opportunity has presented itself now.

Manchester United are walking into the most important leg of their season, where four games in the Europa League can decide the speed of their rebuild.

Win the Europa League, and in Ruben Amorim’s own words, ‘everything changes’.

But how is that a golden opportunity for Chido Obi, who’s not even eligible to play in the competition? The stars are aligning.

Chido Obi’s golden chance at Man Utd

To Obi’s credit, he’s already made his United debut on the back of continuing his ridiculous scoring run that he brought from Arsenal.

However, he has been pushed back into the background recently as Amorim has tried to keep him away from the hype and limelight.

Now, a chance has presented itself which might leave Amorim with no choice but to throw him in at the deep end regularly.

Joshua Zirkzee’s injury sees him miss the rest of the season and while that is a huge blow on its own, the lesson learned from it is bigger.

Zirkzee was risked in a meaningless Premier League game, something which shouldn’t happen to Rasmus Hojlund anymore because he’s the only fit striker at the club.

Chido Obi is ineligible for the Europa League, so it’s a straightforward decision to give the remaining six league games to Obi while Hojlund plays the Europa League fixtures fit and fresh.

Obi can save Man Utd millions

It is an opportunity born out of a crisis but if Obi impresses in the remaining six league games, then United could feel confident about going into next season with just one more striker of average pedigree.

The six league games effectively being a free hit also provides him an ideal opportunity to learn his trade in relatively pressure-free conditions, much like Jack Moorhouse, who can break out now.

Man Utd fans will happily trade away six losses in the Premier League in exchange for winning the Europa League, an ideal scenario for youngsters.

Obi was already knocking on the door and would have received some minutes as the Europa League takes precedence.

With Zirkzee’s injury, it becomes a matter of when, and not if.
