Bruno Fernandes’ pursuit of the Premier League assist record for Manchester United has become one of the biggest narratives of this season.
The record held by Thierry Henry and matched by Kevin de Bruyne hasn’t been beaten for 23 years. But after Manchester United beat Brentford 2-1, there is a good chance it’s smashed.
This is because Bruno Fernandes assisted Benjamin Sesko for his 19th assist of the Premier League campaign, one from equalling the record with four games left to play.
With Fernandes in historically good form, it feels almost certain he will get at least two more assists and set a new uncatchable record.
But he won’t only have eyes on beating Henry.
Bruno Fernandes gets another assist – the record is almost his!
Do you think he could get two in the next game vs Liverpool?!

Bruno Fernandes will have European record in his sights as well
Fernandes is in contention to win the PFA Player of the Year, given his magnificent campaign coupled with United being the third-best club in the league.
With a World Cup to play for with Portugal, Fernandes could find himself in Ballon d’Or conversations.
What would help his argument to win this award would be if he were able to make European assist history, which currently looks very possible.
Fernandes might be one behind the Premier League record, but in terms of the top five leagues all time single-season assists record, he needs three to break it.
- Thomas Muller – 21
- Lionel Messi – 21
- Thierry Henry – 20
- Kevin de Bruyne – 20
- Bruno Fernandes – 19
This shows how frighteningly good he has been this season, with his assist numbers still on the low end compared to the amount of chances he has been creating.
Fernandes missed three games through injury as well, which suggests that if he hadn’t, he would have already broken the record.
Beating a record held by Messi of all people would be massively impressive.

A win will seal Champions League qualification…
Where does Fernandes rank in all-time Manchester United assists?
Fernandes can put himself in the history books with the greatest creators of his generation by besting these records in the next four games.
But he is also shooting up the Manchester United all-time list.
Currently, Fernandes sits comfortably fourth in the assist rankings, behind and between some of the club’s biggest legends.
- Ryan Giggs – 273
- Wayne Rooney – 143
- David Beckham – 122
- Bruno Fernandes – 106
- Paul Scholes – 83
This is the company Fernandes currently keeps and shows exactly why he is going to go down as a legend, especially so if he stays this summer and guides United to a Premier League title.
