Andy Cole’s prediction for Michael Carrick is what every Man Utd fan should be whispering to one another

Andy Cole has shown the exact balance of where Manchester United fans should be — mentality-wise at least — after Michael Carrick’s permanent appointment.

Michael Carrick engineered a third-place finish in the Premier League in the 2025-26 campaign and secured a return to the Champions League for the 2026-27 season.

All eyes are now on the future for the Manchester United legend, who was appointed the permanent Red Devils head coach ahead of the end of the previous season.

However, United fans should be far more optimistic for the Red Devils under Carrick’s reign at Old Trafford, with Andy Cole sharing similar sentiments as well.

Andy Cole asked about a Man Utd title challenge in the 2026-27 Premier League campaign and his response speaks volumes

The footballing landscape changed in a major way both during and after the 2025-26 Premier League campaign, which sets the stage for Michael Carrick now.

Arsenal finally captured the Premier League trophy after it had eluded them for more than two decades, while Pep Guardiola bowed out of Manchester City as manager.

Liverpool’s Premier League title defence fell incredibly flat and former Reds boss Arne Slot was subsequently sacked after two seasons in charge at Anfield.

The traditional ‘big six’ model is well and truly over, with Chelsea finishing a lacklustre sixth and Tottenham narrowly avoiding Premier League relegation.

When asked if Manchester United could challenge for the Premier League title with Pep Guardiola out of the picture, Andy Cole summed up the sentiment perfectly.

“The more football matches you win, you never know, and ultimately that’s what it’s about,” he told Sky Sports.

“So, yeah, I think that if they [Man Utd] can go into this season with the same confidence that [they] ended up [with] last season, you never know what can happen.

“I think everyone will be thinking, like, that now Pep [has left] Manchester City, that we’ve got a chance of winning the Premier League.

“Football, some days are good, some days are bad. So, you just never know.”

Michael Carrick and Ineos must throw the kitchen sink at the Premier League title in the 2026-27 campaign

No matter what is said, United are serious contenders to challenge for the Premier League title outside of Arsenal, even if they are deemed as a potential dark horse.

The turnaround at Old Trafford was nothing short of remarkable after Ruben Amorim’s turbulent reign as United manager came to an end in January.

When the manager bounce wore off after Carrick’s arrival, the Man Utd legend was able to navigate the bumps in the road before putting the Red Devils in the top four.

There is no denying that a title challenge will be difficult next season, as all eyes are on Ineos over the key targets that are needed for the United squad in the summer.

However, the massive change in the Premier League’s current ecosystem signals the opportunity that United have been waiting for since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement.
