£43 million United star’s horror show is worrying, £4 million replacement should be given chance v Bayern Munich

It was a familiar sight for Manchester United in the Champions League, Andre Onana looked up to the sky and shook his head.

Andre Onana had just let in a weak free-kick from Hakim Ziyech and the Manchester United goalkeeper looked shell-shocked and perhaps was at fault for the third goal from Muhammed Kerem Aktürkoğlu, too.

The Cameroon international was beginning to show the form that made United shell out £43 million for his services, according to Sky Sports, and he does have the joint-most clean sheets in the Premier League, but tonight was a shocker.

Similar to his error against Bayern Munich, allowing Leroy Sane’s shot to squirm through his fingers, the Cameroon international did the same thing with Ziyech’s free-kick, it was appalling.

Onana’s Champions League struggles

It could be argued that apart from the home game against FC Copenhagen, the United goalkeeper has made a mistake in every single European game, but that would be harsh.

In the game against Bayern away, as mentioned, he allowed Sane’s effort to wriggle through his fingers. Against Galatasaray at home, he allowed Mauro Icardi to dink the ball over him far too easily. He couldn’t really do anything about the four Copenhagen goals scored in the 4-3 defeat but tonight was a different story.

For whatever reason, when it’s a European night, the goalkeeper looks very nervous in goal for the Red Devils and has to improve his concentration, because to be caught out twice by the same sort of freekick is poor.

The goalkeeper’s drop in form, particularly on such a big night is concerning. Perhaps it’s time to bring in his £4 million understudy.

Bayindir’s time to shine

Altay Bayindir joined the club from Fenerbahce for around £4 million and the Turkish goalkeeper has reportedly impressed coaches at Carrington.

Starting Bayindir against Bayern Munich would be a risk but United’s fate in the competition is almost sealed anyway, so there is no harm in starting the 25-year-old.

He has waited patiently enough for his chance in the United first-team and the time may be right at Old Trafford on the 12th of December when Thomas Tuchel’s side comes to visit.

Onana deserves to keep his place in the Premier League but has to be punished in some way for his performance, dropping him for the final game would send a clear message to the 27-year-old, these performances aren’t acceptable.
