Three players who are in trouble if Erik ten Hag leaves Manchester United

Since becoming Manchester United manager in the summer of 2022, Erik ten Hag has established some favourites at Old Trafford.

During his stint at Manchester United, Erik ten Hag won the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup during his stint at Old Trafford but his future is certainly in the balance.

United have suffered 3-0 defeats to Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur and the pressure is mounting on the Dutchman after what has been a poor start to the season, which followed a dismal Premier League campaign last season.

If the Dutchman’s time as manager is coming to an end, here are three players whose position in the team could be coming under pressure.

Marcus Rashford

Marcus Rashford may well be the most divisive United player in the Premier League with the Englishman even splitting his own fanbase due to his performances.

Rashford was in red-hot form against FC Twente but was criticised for his role in the Tottenham opener by Gary Neville on the weekend.

Since his 30-goal campaign during Ten Hag’s debut season, things have been rocky for Rashford with his struggles off the pitch leading to struggles on it.

There have been calls to drop the Englishman and you wonder if a new manager was brought in to replace Ten Hag whether Rashford could find himself on the bench.

Certainly, you’d expect a new manager to rotate the Englishman, despite the obvious qualities he has.

Luke Shaw

Since Ten Hag has been manager of United, Luke Shaw’s injury problems have been well documented. The Englishman has yet to feature in the Premier League, or indeed any competition.

United have been linked with a move for Antonee Robinson and this interest makes a lot of sense as Shaw’s unreliability is becoming a problem that the next manager may well have to deal with.

When Shaw has played for United, he’s been a vital cog for the club but his injury record is verging on the ridiculous and perhaps it is time for the Red Devils to invest in a specialist left-back.

Bruno Fernandes

By no means are we suggesting that Bruno Fernandes will be dropped under a new manager but the Portuguese midfielder will surely be rotated.

Despite Benni McCarthy claiming Fernandes is good enough for Real Madrid, the midfielder has not had a good start to the 2024/25 season for United and questions have been asked about the former Sporting Lisbon ace.

The United captain signed a new deal in the summer but with Mason Mount itching to make an impact, perhaps the new manager will rotate more often.

Fernandes’ injury record is almost impeccable but there will come a time when the Portuguese international will hit an age where he needs to be rotated.
