Wout Weghorst scores first club goal since Man Utd summer exit, he has been waiting seven months

Former Manchester United striker Wout Weghorst finally scored the long awaited goal he has been searching for.

You have to go back a long way to find the last time Wout Weghorst scored a club goal.

It came way back on March 9 when the on loan striker netted for Manchester United in a 4-1 win over Real Betis.

It was the second of two goals Weghorst scored in a Manchester United shirt, with his loan spell failing to ignite as he hoped.

Manchester United did not pursue a permanent deal for Wout Weghorst. His loan spell trailed off after the Betis win, rather than the goal propelling him forward.

Weghorst returned to Burnley before securing a loan back to the Bundesliga, where he enjoyed the best spell of his career, signing with Hoffenheim.

But it has been tough going for Weghorst back in Germany, going several weeks without finding the scoresheet.

That finally changed at the weekend, with Weghorst scoring in Hoffenheim’s 3-2 win away at Stuttgart.

Here’s the thing. It was a penalty. The chance had to be laid on a plate for him to score.

But when you are on a goal drought, you can’t complain how they come. It will just be a huge relief for Weghorst to hit the back of the net.

The Dutchman spoke of his relief after scoring. It is seven months since he did so for United, and was closing in on eight.

Weghorst told Kicker: “I’m very happy, it took a long time.”

His manager Pellegrino Matarazzo said he was pleased for the striker, commenting: “I’m happy for Wout, it’s a topic that has been on his mind in the last few days and weeks.

“We’ve often assured him how important he is to us, and that’s the case again this time regardless of his goal. He also always works defensively for the team, and the way he secures the ball up front is excellent. I’m very grateful that he’s in our team.”
