Wout Weghorst has failed to prove Manchester United wrong at Hoffenheim so far

Manchester United struck an emergency deal to sign striker Wout Weghorst in January. It was just a temporary move.

When he first signed on loan, Wout Weghorst was a breath of fresh air. He reminded Manchester United fans what it was like to have a striker who could actually stay fit, while Marcus Rashford was able to revert to his preferred role on the left.

Gradually, reality hit, with Wout Weghorst displaying one major flaw… he could not score enough goals.

Weghorst ended his spell at Manchester United with a tally of just two goals in 31 games. It wasn’t nearly enough.

Manchester United decided against Wout Weghorst return

If Manchester United wanted him to be, then Wout Weghorst would have been brought back. But the Dutchman did not show enough.

By time mid-April hit, it was quite apparent that Weghorst had blown his audition, despite plenty of effort. He just didn’t prove to be the goalscorer United needed.

There was no debate over the decision not to bring him back when his loan expired.

How Wout Weghorst is faring at Hoffenheim

Weghorst signed for German side Hoffenheim, with Burnley sanctioning a loan deal in August.

The striker has a good record in the Bundesliga, previously with Wolfsburg, but this hasn’t translated upon his return to the division.

Weghorst is yet to score a goal for Hoffenheim in six games, 473 minutes of football.

It means his last club goal was for Manchester United in March, in the 4-1 home win against Real Betis.

Kicker report Hoffenheim have ‘few alternatives’ to Weghorst up front, noting that his ‘mentality’ has impressed, even if his lack of goals have disappointed.

Weghorst did score during the previous international break for Netherlands, but it did not prompt a change in fortune at club level.

Manchester United have struggled to score goals this season, netting a paltry nine goals in eight Premier League games.

But Weghorst failed to score in the league for United, and he is not showing anything in Germany to suggest the Red Devils made the wrong decision not to re-sign him, even as a back-up.
