Why Julian Ryerson’s assist record at Borussia Dortmund is catching Man Utd’s attention

Borussia Dortmund star Julian Ryerson continued his impressive run of form in the Champions League after being linked with a summer move to Manchester United.

Manchester United are missing out on European football after losing the Europa League final last season, before finishing 15th in the Premier League.

Michael Carrick is trying to conduct a revival of sorts since returning to United as head coach, with the ultimate objective being Champions League qualification.

Getting back into Europe’s most prestigious competition would help United attract better players and compete with the best teams, while fans follow the team far and wide again.

With a lack of midweek fixtures for the Red Devils this season, it’s given United fans a chance to watch other teams and keep an eye on loanees as well as transfer targets.

Just two United loanees are playing in the Champions League as things stand. They include Marcus Rashford at Barcelona and Rasmus Hojlund at Napoli.

If Carrick can secure a place in the Champions League ahead of next season, the 44-year-old could become a serious contender to remain as head coach.

Julian Ryerson stars in Borussia Dortmund’s 2-0 win over Atalanta

Reports in Germany suggested Borussia Dortmund’s versatile right-back Julian Ryerson is on United’s radar.

The Norwegian has been linked with a summer move to Barcelona, Newcastle and now United.

Ryerson played a key role as Dortmund took a decisive step towards the Champions League last 16 after beating Atalanta 2-0 in the first leg of the knockout play-offs.

United-linked Ryerson picked out Serhou Guirassy near the far post to open the scoring in the third minute, giving Dortmund an early lead.

The Bundesliga outfit made it 2-0 before half-time as the night went from bad to worse for the Italians.

However, there’s a reason Ryerson is catching United’s attention.

The right-back can also play as a wing-back, but he’s become an assist king this season, with 14 assists after setting up Guirassy in Tuesday night’s game.

Ryerson will remain on United’s radar if he continues performing at a high level in the Champions League. It looks like Dortmund are destined for a place in the last 16 as they hold a two-goal advantage ahead of the second leg.

Julian Ryerson’s incredible 2026 form could tempt Man Utd

Ryerson has recorded nine assists in nine games since the beginning of 2026, as per Opta Franz.

The only player with a better record than that is Bayern Munich’s Michael Olise (10 in nine), who will be familiar to United fans from his time at Crystal Palace.

In comparison with Diogo Dalot, who has three assists to his name this season, United may look to sign a right-back who will help the forward players.

Ryerson’s numbers this season explain why they are keen on the player.

United are likely to monitor Ryerson until the end of the season.
