Manchester United have taken Exeter City youngster Sonny Cox on trial.
The news was reported by Devon Live shortly before United kicked off last night’s Europa League quarter-final win over Granada.
Cox is a young striker who is making a big impression in youth football.
At just 15-years-old, he has already scored in the FA Youth Cup, netting four goals in this year’s competition, including a win over Bournemouth.
United are not the only side interested. Exeter boss Matt Taylor told Devon Live that the club are the ‘third side’ Cox has been on trial with, as he weighs up his future options.
‘Everyone is interested in signing him’, the manager added.
Cox was named on the bench for Exeter’s EFL Trophy games earlier in the season too.
It’s unclear if Cox will fetaure for United’s table topping under-18 side this weekend. The team have a fixture against Stoke City at 11.30am on Saturday, so he could be a name to look out for.
With Brexit restricting clubs from signing non-UK players under 18, there is extra incentive for Premier League clubs to pursue young English stars of the future.
Hoping to make the big time
Cox will take inspiration from Exeter’s most recent academy star of recent, years, Ollie Watkins.
Watkins shone at the Grecians before signing with Brentford, and then making a £28 million move to Aston Villa last summer, where he has scored 13 goals.
United have signed a player from Exeter previously, signing Sean Goss in 2015.
After a spell at Rangers in Scotland, Goss signed for QPR. Now 25, Goss plays for Shrewsbury Town.
