Earlier this summer, Manchester United announced that Tom Heaton had penned a new contract, continuing his work as the third-choice goalkeeper in a key role off the pitch.

Dermot Mee signs Manchester United contract

Technically, Mee’s contract expired on June 30th, 2026, but there was no doubt that he would remain at the club.

On Friday 3rd of July, United’s official website confirmed that the goalkeeper has signed a new two-year contract.

Mee is listed on the confirmation as an academy graduate, but he has yet to play a game for United’s first-team.

But he does have a very important role for the club, in other ways.

What does Dermot Mee do at Manchester United?

While being a part of the first-team squad, Mee isn’t a name that is seen on the teamsheet very often.

This is because Mee is effectively fourth choice goalkeeper, with his job instead to aid and push Senne Lammens in training, take part in warm-ups for shooting drills, and provide competition.

The role he plays doesn’t get seen by supporters, but it is absolutely key to United and any club.

Whether the 23-year-old is going to take Tom Heaton’s role as third choice is unclear, and he might never play for the club. But having joined United at the age of 11, Mee is living the dream already.

It has been four years since Mee first became a regular training with United’s first-team, and now it will be the case until 2028 at least.

Mee will have bigger plans at United

While his role is effectively a player/coach at the moment, given his purpose is to help others, he will want to prove he deserves to be thought of higher.

United could need a new number two this summer, and Mee will surely be thinking he can prove a point and compete with Heaton this summer for pre-season minutes.

But even behind the scenes, United have a great character and a solid goalkeeper to help the starters.
