With Manchester United’s defensive issues mounting ahead of the Champions League clash against Villarreal, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side could be given a huge boost.
That’s because Unai Emery’s star man Gerard Moreno is ‘a doubt’ for the Group F clash as he nurses a hamstring injury.
That’s according to El Periodico Mediterraneo, who say the Spanish star could miss Wednesday’s game at Old Trafford.
Moreno has missed his team’s last three La Liga games due to injury which included last night’s 0-0 draw away to Real Madrid.
Timely boost for United
With Aaron Wan-Bissaka suspended and question marks surrounding the fitness of Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire following the injuries they sustained against Aston Villa, Solskjaer will hope that Moreno remains unavailable.
It was the Spanish international who gave his side the lead in last season’s Europa League final between the two sides.
With Maguire injured, Moreno was left unmarked following a Daniel Parejo free-kick and turned the ball past David de Gea.
Moreno’s strike in the final was his 30th of the campaign, which was the most prolific season of his career to date.
In 190 games for the Yellow Submarine, Moreno has scored 83 goals and registered 27 assists, so he is averaging an impressive goalscoring contribution every other match (Transfermarkt).
The 29-year-old may of not scored for his national side at the Euros, but he is capable of producing on the biggest stage like he showed against United in Gdansk and against Chelsea in this season’s UEFA Super Cup.
In Villarreal’s last two games, Emery has selected Paco Alcacer and the former Bournemouth man Arnaut Danjuma to play up front.
With Moreno potentially being unavailable, the Spanish giants will definitely be without the suspended Francis Coquelin and the injured Samu Chukwueze.
Manchester United should fancy their chances of gaining revenge over Villarreal even if Moreno was fit, but with defensive concerns mounting, Solskjaer will take Emery not having his very own number seven superstar available.
