When Man United will learn if Liverpool match will go ahead as statement confirms new safety meeting

The Red Devils were scheduled to travel to Merseyside to face arch-rivals Liverpool in a 4:30pm kick-off on Sunday.

Ruben Amorim’s side are huge underdogs for the clash after losing their last four games in a row, including Monday’s 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United at Old Trafford.

In contrast, Liverpool have won their last three fixtures and sit top of the Premier League table. United are slumped in 14th and Amorim admits relegation is a possibility.

Thankfully, Amorim has finally had time to train at Carrington this week after being starved of time on the training pitch over a hectic December schedule.

It turns out he may have even longer to work with his players with Sunday’s trip to Liverpool now in doubt due to the snow that hit England overnight.

Liverpool release statement about Man United clash

With heavy snow forecast for Saturday night heading into Sunday morning, a safety meeting was scheduled to take place at 9:30am to assess the likelihood of the match taking place.

That meeting has now concluded and Liverpool released an official statement revealing the game is still going ahead as it stands.

“At this stage the match is planned to go ahead as normal and every effort is being made to get the game on,” part of the statement read.

However, it also confirmed that a second safety meeting is set to take place at midday to assess the latest conditions. A final decision will likely be made in that meeting, just more than four hours before the scheduled kick-off time.

Man United’s recent record vs Liverpool

If United’s recent form in the Premier League wasn’t enough to paint them as huge underdogs, the record against Liverpool certainly will.

United have failed to score in their last five trips to Anfield in the Premier League, with Jesse Lingard the last player to score at Anfield back in 2018.

The Red Devils did dramatically beat Liverpool 4-3 in the FA Cup last season with Amad Diallo scoring an extra-time winner, but that was one of only two wins against Liverpool in the last nine meetings.

Amorim is feeling optimistic after a good week of training, but it will be a huge ask for United to get a result against Liverpool – if it even takes place.

If the game is postponed, it will likely be rescheduled around March or April towards the latter stages of the season.
