Ruben Amorim’s rise could be coinciding with Pep Guardiola’s fall as yesterday’s man.

Manchester United scored an impressive 2-1 victory over Manchester City, scoring two late goals to turn the result on it’s head.

City had led since Josko Gvardiol’s 36th minute opener, but had barely deserved their lead. They had looked nervous compared to their usual confident selves, and only edged the possession battle with 52 per cent.

United matched City with 10 shots each and three each on target – with United left feeling like they had earned the win by the end.

The winning goal was a moment of magic from Amad, a wondrous strike that will be used on derby highlight reels again and again in years to come.

Pep Guardiola shellshocked

City boss Pep Guardiola was left shell-shocked by Manchester United’s ‘incredibly persisent’ late win.

Speaking after the game, Guardiola said: “Not much to say. No defence, they were incredibly persistent.”

BBC Sport’s Simon Stone reported how Guardiola was in sombre mood at the full-time whistle at The Etihad: “Guardiola marched onto the pitch and made a point of consoling every single Manchester City player.

“He shook the hand of referee Anthony Taylor and his team of officials and all the Manchester City players, offering a particularly warm embrace to Casemiro.

“He then walked across the pitch and down the tunnel, taking his coat off and rubbing his head in almost stunned disbelief.”

City star said they played like kids

While Pep Guardiola could barely digest Manchester United’s win, City midfielder Bernardo Silva was left angry with his team.

He blamed themselves for failing to manage the game effectively and seeing it out, collapsing from leading 1-0 to losing 2-1.

Silva said: “Minute 87 in a derby, winning 1-0 and our corner ends in a penalty for them, if we make these stupid decisions with three or four minutes to go you deserve to pay for that. Looking at the game I think there was only one team that could win the game, but at the end we lost.

“It’s not one game, it’s a lot of games lately. We have to look at ourselves. You can say oh t’s a bit unlucky, no. It’s the decisions you make. Today in the last minute we played like under-15s.”

United fans will have little sympathy for City falling apart – we hoped their poor form would last long enough to impact them in the derby, and now we simply hope it continues for as long as possible.
