Ruben Amorim wasted no time showing his true colours about Matheus Cunha at Old Trafford ahead of Manchester United’s 2025-26 Premier League season.
Matheus Cunha finally ended his Manchester United goalscoring drought after the summer signing had a major impact in the Red Devils’ latest Premier League outing.
The 26-year-old Brazilian went his first seven Premier League matches in the 2025-26 season without scoring before finding the back of the net against Brighton.
Casemiro set up fellow Brazil international Cunha in the first half and the former Wolves ace buried a long-range strike into the bottom-right corner of the net.
Cunha later expressed his relief at scoring in United’s 4-2 Premier League win over Brighton at Old Trafford, despite impressing in previous matches for the club.

Ruben Amorim was asked about Matheus Cunha and the Man Utd manager’s verdict spoke volumes
Matheus Cunha has made nine appearances across all competitions since the Red Devils made their big-money move for the Brazil international in the summer.
The former Wolves forward was the first major summer signing to arrive under Ruben Amorim, with the Red Devils triggering his £62.5m release clause in June.
Cunha has slotted well into Amorim’s tactical system for United and linked up superbly with Benjamin Sesko and Bryan Mbeumo in the attacking set-up.
Following the former Wolves star’s performance in United’s victory over Brighton, Cunha was spotlighted in an opinion piece for the Red Devils’ official website.
Harry Robinson revealed in the op-ed piece that United staff “asked” Amorim about how Cunha was “settling in” at Old Trafford during the pre-season tour in the US.
He said on Manchester United’s official website that Amorim “laughed” when he was asked about it “off camera,” but he eventually showed his true stance on Cunha.
According to Harry Robinson, Amorim’s “exact quote” about Cunha “isn’t printable,” but he added that his comments about the player “included the word ‘baller.’”
Ruben Amorim’s reaction to Matheus Cunha’s display vs Brighton after he broke his Man Utd goalscoring drought
United manager Amorim welcomed the performance of Cunha on Saturday and was thrilled by the former Wolves star’s overall contribution against Brighton.
“You felt that – I think everyone felt against Liverpool – he feels more confident if the game is harder, he wants the responsibility,” he said at his post-match press conference, as per Manchester United’s official website.
“I really like the way he defends today. He was not jumping all the time. He was not jumping and then returning to position without the right pace.”
Amorim added: “Today, [he] defend[ed] really well. And when he has the ball, he’s not my concern. I have no concerns [when] Matheus has the ball.
“He was struggling about not scoring goals. He can try to hide, but I understand. He was really happy, but I’m [happy] not just with Matheus.
“I think everyone understood really well how to beat a very good team.”
Cunha played 81 minutes of the Premier League tie against Brighton at Old Trafford before Amorim subbed him off and replaced him with United star Manuel Ugarte.
