What people close to Casemiro now expect to happen at Man Utd amid contract talks

Casemiro’s improved form for Manchester United has led to question marks over a contract extension since the Brazilian’s current deal is set to expire at the end of the season.

It has been a huge boost for Ruben Amorim to see Casemiro’s revival in midfield.

Not only does it ease Manchester United’s problems in the centre of the pitch to have Casemiro performing at a high level, but it also helps fill a void many fans were concerned about when the Red Devils failed to sign a new midfielder in the summer.

United are expected to sign a new midfielder in January; however, it won’t be easy to find a replacement for Casemiro because the Brazilian veteran is a proven winner of the highest standard.

Amorim prefers a double pivot of Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes in his favoured 3-4-2-1 system, which means Kobbie Mainoo has yet to start a Premier League match this season.

It’s also worth noting that Casemiro is preparing for a big year as the 2026 World Cup will likely be his final chance to play in the biggest international football tournament.

United will also need to decide what they want to do with Casemiro in 2026 because his contract will expire in the summer unless an extension is agreed between the two parties.

Casemiro likely to leave Man Utd

Casemiro is not the only United player with a contract set to expire in 2026.

Other players include Harry Maguire, Tyrell Malacia and Tom Heaton.

Neither Malacia nor Heaton have appeared this season, but Maguire has featured regularly when fit.

Maguire has made nine appearances for United this term, scoring two goals, including the winner in United’s 2-1 win over Liverpool in October.

Speaking on the latest episode of The Football Reporters podcast, produced by ESPN, Rob Dawson claims that people close to Casemiro believe he is more likely to leave Old Trafford than stay.

Dawson adds that Casemiro and Maguire’s situations are completely different as things stand, which could be an indication that the England international will be given a new deal.

“Casemiro and Maguire are different situations, although at the moment, you know, Casemiro, especially the people around Casemiro, believe that he’s more likely to leave than stay, even though United are open to the idea that he might sign a reduced deal on highly incentivised wages,” Dawson said.

“So that while they’re trying to reduce the wage bill overall, they’re also trying to get to a point where United are back challenging for the top trophies.”

It would be a major shock if Malacia or Heaton were given new contracts.

Casemiro continues to star under Carlo Ancelotti for Brazil

Casemiro has played a key role in Brazil securing a spot at the 2026 World Cup, captaining the team twice ahead of the tournament.

Carlo Ancelotti, who knows Casemiro from their time together at Real Madrid, told reporters at the weekend that he is Brazil’s most important player.

“He is the most important player for the team’s balance,” Ancelotti said. “He is very tactically intelligent. He shows great leadership. He is an important player for us.”

It remains to be seen if Casemiro will prove as important to United at the end of the season or if he’ll be searching for a new club.
