According to Le 10 Sport, Manchester United are leading the race for centre-back William Saliba.
The 18-year-old is one of the most highly rated prospects in French football. He also allegedly has a £25million price-tag despite only featuring 13 times for Saint-Etienne.
But what does United’s interest say about the current crop of young defenders at Old Trafford?
While Tahith Chong, Angel Gomes, Mason Greenwood and James Garner have all broken through, the same cannot be said for defensive players.
United recently sold Ro-Shaun Williams, while Axel Tuanzebe and Timothy Fosu-Mensah remain on loan.
The latter has gone backwards in recent years. And it would be a surprise if the Dutchman has a long-term future at Old Trafford.
Saliba is touted as a future French superstar. If United can get him for £25million, they could be celebrating a bargain a few years down the line.
With the Daily Mail claiming United are also tracking £10million-rated Ben Godfrey, it seems the team is light in defensive academy prospects.
Signing Saliba and sending him back on loan to Ligue 1 for a season could a possible option. A move for the young talent would address one of the areas of weakness in United’s under-23s.
