Wes Brown urges United to get Frenkie de Jong and Christian Eriksen deals done

Former Manchester United defender Wes Brown has urged the Red Devils to get the proposed double deal for Frenkie de Jong and Christian Eriksen done.

United are negotiating with Barcelona over a move for De Jong, with The Telegraph reporting the club aim to get a deal tied up by the end of this week.

The Athletic report United have offered a contract to Eriksen, who is weighing up his next move ahead of becoming a free agent on July 1.

Former title winner West Brown told MUTV’s The Debate he believes both players would be strong signings in an area where United are weak.

Wes Brown urges United to get deals done

Brown said United need to start making moves and believes Frenkie de Jong would be a strong addition to the squad.

He said: “He [De Jong] is a quality player, he will be able to handle the badge, the main thing is ‘can we get it done’.

“We don’t want to be rushing it but we have let four midfielders go; Pogba, Jesse, Mata, Matic so we do need players in that area, it’s as simple as that.

“I think he would be a quality signing and Eriksen as well. He’s come back to Brentford and you see the quality straight away, his assists, he was setting up a lot of goals.

“He is a player that quite a few clubs will be after him. Hopefully I think he’d be a great addition, he’d love it here as well, the fans would love him. Even me as a fan I think it would be a very good signing.”

Big week ahead for United

One way or another, this is shaping up as a pivotal week for United, with Eriksen expected to deliver his decision to the club.

If a deal for Eriksen is agreed on a free transfer in addition to De Jong, then it will make the big fee set to be spent on the Dutchman much more palatable as United can look on them as a pair for £70 million.

The first group of players returned for pre-season on Monday, starting their new football education under Erik ten Hag, and a few new signings would lift the positive mood further.
