Benjamin Sesko scored the winning goal for Manchester United in the win at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, raising more questions over whether he should be starting under Michael Carrick.

Benjamin Sesko made it three goals in his last four games for Manchester United on Monday night, all of which have been from the bench.

Sesko’s goal rate has exploded after Ruben Amorim’s exit, and he looks worth every bit of the transfer fee he commanded last summer.

However, despite his clinical goal record of a strike every 46 minutes since Amorim’s sacking, Michael Carrick is yet to be convinced that the Slovenian should start.

Why Michael Carrick might not start Benjamin Sesko

Five of the 16 points picked up under Carrick have come through Sesko’s goals from the bench. Being a reliable goal threat off the bench isn’t a terrible thing, but he will be desperate to start.

Despite Sesko shining against Everton and changing the game for United, Wes Brown doesn’t think that he will have earned a start, while speaking to club media after the game.

“He’s a good lad. We’ve all met him, and I’m sure he’ll be having a laugh and a joke with Michael as well, saying, ‘Am I starting next week, boss?’ Or something like that because he deserves it.

“But it’s whether you want to change it up again because he’s been phenomenal as a sub as well. If you’re getting a reaction like you’re getting when he comes on after whatever it is, say 60 minutes, 65 minutes. Michael’s got an argument to say, ‘Well, I just want you to keep doing that for now.'”

Gary Neville praised the decision to bring Sesko off the bench, and there is no denying that the team functions better with a proper striker.

The performance has left United fans convinced that Sesko will start the next game against Crystal Palace next weekend.

One trend that has remained between the Amorim and Carrick spells is the struggle to break down low blocks. But the current selections of Carrick aren’t helping his case.

United are currently putting Bryan Mbeumo up-front in games where he is trying to battle for long-balls with massive centre-backs. In addition, United doesn’t have any targets in the box for crosses, which is the main route of attack when teams sit in.

Sesko would change that from minute one, as he would give defenders something to think about, and he would always be in the box, when currently the penalty area is vacant by United attackers.

Against Palace at Old Trafford, Carrick needs to give Sesko his first start, moving Mbeumo to the right, and benching Amad. He also needs to put Chido Obi on the bench to give United another proper number nine option.

In games where United are expected to have possession, Sesko needs to be the starter.
