Ruben Amorim is hoping to have another option on the bench this weekend during the Manchester Derby.

The past few months have been a struggle for Ruben Amorim as he has faced a Manchester United injury epidemic with several players missing substantial periods of time.

This has seen players like Amad Diallo and Lisandro Martinez out injured for months, while the list has fluctuated with various names spending periods out of action, along with long-term absentees Luke Shaw and Mason Mount.

Due to this, Amorim has resorted to naming a bench packed with academy talent, some of whom may not even be ready for the step up to Premier League football.

However, after the international break, it was clear that the injury crisis was easing for United, and now Amorim has shared hope over another possible returning star this weekend.

Kobbie Mainoo set for Manchester United return

On Friday, Amorim has been speaking with the press ahead of the Manchester Derby clash at Old Trafford this weekend, and he had some potentially encouraging news about Kobbie Mainoo ahead of the derby.

Speaking to MUTV, Amorim has hinted that fans could see Mainoo this weekend, as the 19-year-old returned to training this week

“I think Kobbie is returning to training, we will see, assess this game. He cannot play a full game.”

This suggests that Amorim sees Mainoo potentially occupying the bench on Sunday. Mainoo hasn’t played for United since February when he was ruled out injured.

While there is one return, Amorim is also expecting one player to miss out, with Matthijs de Ligt seen as doubtful after a knock against Nottingham Forest.

“I think Matthijs is an issue; he has something in the game, and we have to assess.”

United have been boosted in the past few weeks with Mount’s return, particularly pleasing to Amorim. Shaw is also in training, while Leny Yoro and Harry Maguire also both made their returns to the club.

But despite this, there are still quite a few names on the list.

This list is much more manageable than it was a month ago for Amorim, which should see the bench look much stronger than it has over the past few months.

Amorim will hope that Amad, in particular, returns for the club in time for a prospective Europa League final in May.

Most importantly, with players returning into an improving team, it could make a huge impact on the quality being displayed at the club.
