Wayne Rooney praises Michael Carrick’s impact on the academy
There are a lot of winners from Carrick’s appointment, but Rooney has specifically heralded the impact this decision has on the academy.
Speaking on the Inside Carrington Podcast, after the announcement, Rooney told Carrick the impact he’s having.
“I’ve seen a change in the academy. Obviously, before you even came in here, me and you have been standing there watching the games.
“It’s so nice, even when we were here and the gaffer then, so nice to see the first team staff there watching. That’s not only at Old Trafford, but obviously there are pictures here at the training ground, and you being there gives them such a [buzz].”
Carrick then responded to Rooney’s praise.
“I genuinely care about how the young players are doing, You need to try and give as many opportunities as you can. To create that feeling and connection through the club, is exactly what the club is built on and it’s been there long before us.”
Rooney and Carrick are both incredibly well-positioned to speak about the academy with their sons currently in the U16 side.
So it makes sense Carrick would be acting in a manner that he would have wanted Ruben Amorim to. Rooney slammed Amorim’s academy treatment, so for Carrick to be fixing this, it shows why he is destined to be a success here.

Manchester United agree with Rooney’s praise for Carrick
Rooney’s observation of Carrick’s academy commitment comes from the point of view of a father, and wanting his son to get seen by the first-team staff.
But Ineos have also been impressed by Carrick in this regard.
According to Steven Railston, United have been fond of Carrick’s understanding and care for the academy, which the club believes showcases his attention to the long term future of the club.
Throughout his interim spell, Carrick explained he was making decisions for the long-term of the club, not the short term, and Ineos think he showed this with his trips to Leigh Sports Village to watch the academy, along with a trip to Oxford for an FA Youth Cup clash.
This has likely played a pretty substantial role in Carrick getting the job on a permanent basis this summer.
