Wayne Rooney praised one Manchester United star’s superb performance against Sunderland after spotting “something clearly” that Ruben Amorim’s men have worked on in training.

The 39-year-old England and Manchester United legend offered his two cents on the Red Devils after Ruben Amorim’s side returned to winning ways on the weekend.

United hosted Sunderland at Old Trafford and the Red Devils secured all three Premier League points with a strong showing in their 2-0 victory over the Black Cats.

Mason Mount made a major impact inside the opening 10 minutes after Bryan Mbeumo picked out the former Chelsea ace, who subsequently broke the deadlock for United.

Following the first-half opener from Mason Mount, United built on their advantage over Sunderland after striker Benjamin Sesko added his name to the scoresheet.

Benjamin Sesko has now scored in back-to-back Premier League matches for Manchester United ahead of the start of the October international break.

The 22-year-old Red Devils summer signing opened his goalscoring account at the Premier League club last month in United’s 3-1 defeat to Brentford away from home.

Sesko returned to the starting XI for the Sunderland match and the Slovenian forward netted again amid his lively attacking performance at Old Trafford.

Wayne Rooney admitted that the United striker is benefiting the likes of Mason Mount, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha with his physical presence on the ball.

“I think he’s a handful,” he said on BBC Sport’s The Wayne Rooney Show.

“I think he uses his body well. You know, he challenges for the ball and it makes it easier for Mbeumo and Cunha when he’s on or Mount to make runs in behind him.

“So, I think that’s something clearly [that] they’ve worked on. But yeah, and obviously getting another goal, I think, will help him.”

Wayne Rooney’s feelings on Man Utd’s Premier League result against Sunderland at Old Trafford

United took a 2-0 lead into the break over Sunderland and Ruben Amorim’s men maintained their advantage in the second half of the Premier League tie as well.

The Red Devils’ result was a major boost for United manager Amorim, who has come under fire early in the 2025-26 season over his side’s mixed results in the league.

Rooney has now insisted that United’s three Premier League points on Saturday afternoon against Sunderland were huge for both the players and Amorim.

“So, I think for all of the players the win was massive,” he continued.

“For the manager, the win was massive and much needed.”

United are 10th in the Premier League table going into the October international break and the Red Devils have won three of their opening seven league matches.
