Wayne Rooney says he’s actually been ‘really happy’ with one of Man Utd’s new signings this season

Wayne Rooney has been impressed by one of Manchester United’s newest signings.

Ruben Amorim was responsible for revamping Manchester United’s attack during the summer, after deciding to move on some attacking players who were deemed surplus to requirements.

Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund left United on loan, while Antony and Alejandro Garnacho earned permanent moves away from Old Trafford.

That made room for three new forward players to join United’s first team, which led to the signings of Matheus Cunha, Benjamin Sesko, and Bryan Mbeumo.

Cunha was the first to arrive at United after completing a transfer from Wolves. A month later, Mbeumo followed from Brentford as United began to work on a deal with RB Leipzig for Sesko.

It’s early days yet, but all three players will be hoping to produce more goal contributions in the coming weeks.

United have started the new season slowly, but it will take time for the latest recruits to settle into their new surroundings.

Mbeumo won United’s Player of the Month award for his efforts in August, after scoring his first two goals for United.

Former United striker and captain Wayne Rooney singled out Mbeumo for praise, saying he has been impressed by what he has seen from United’s new forward this season.

“He looks like the type of character who would be fine with it (going back to his old club),” Rooney said on The Wayne Show. “I think he’s been a real positive for Man United this season. I think his energy, his running off the ball, his commitment, he’s scored a couple of goals, he could have had more.

“So I’ve been really happy. I think he’s been, out of all the signings, the most positive one. And he looks like someone who will just take it in his stride.

“So, yeah, I think he’ll be ok. It’s not always easy when you go back.”

After scoring 20 goals for Brentford last season, Mbeumo will be trying to build on that with more goals at his new club.

Mbeumo travels back to Brentford on Saturday to face his former club for the first time.

Rooney’s first season at Man Utd

After turning down a contract at Everton and joining United in 2004, Rooney hit the ground running at Old Trafford.

Rooney scored a hat-trick on his debut against Fenerbahce in the Champions League.

As a teenager, Rooney went on to score 17 goals in his first season at United.

Rooney left Old Trafford in 2017 as United’s record scorer with 253 goals.
