Manchester United and England legend Wayne Rooney has now dropped his clear-cut two cents on Grimsby Town’s stunning upset in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday.

Ruben Amorim was shell-shocked in the Blundell Park dugout after Manchester United crashed out of the 2025-26 Carabao Cup campaign in humiliating fashion.

Grimsby Town had blown United out of the water in the first half at Blundell Park, with Charles Vernam and Tyrell Warren putting their side 2-0 up before half-time.

United faced an uphill battle against Grimsby on Wednesday evening and the Red Devils managed to mount a comeback in the second half of the encounter.

Bryan Mbeumo came off the bench and netted one back for United before a late header from Harry Maguire ensured the second-round tie went to penalties.

Grimsby ultimately walked away with the bragging rights after the League Two outfit converted all 12 of their penalties in a thrilling shootout win over United.

Wayne Rooney now asked about Man Utd’s performance vs Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup at Blundell Park

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim oversaw an erratic performance from the Red Devils in Wednesday’s Carabao Cup penalty shootout loss to Grimsby Town.

The Red Devils had impressed in their Premier League opener for the 2025-26 season earlier this month, despite United losing to rivals Arsenal 1-0 at Old Trafford.

However, United’s strong performance against Arsenal was a one-off after the Red Devils’ disappointing showing in the subsequent 1-1 draw against Fulham last week.

Wayne Rooney has admitted that it was “difficult” to see United’s display against Grimsby and he felt that the Red Devils had regressed even further on the day.

“It was difficult to watch, I think,” he said on BBC Sport’s The Wayne Rooney Show.

“I did feel there was a lot of positives in the Arsenal game, [the] first game of the season, and then Fulham was a disappointment in the performance and then to go to Grimsby and lose in the cup with a lot of the, you know, starting XI involved in the game. The best players [were] involved in the game.”

Amorim was deeply critical of United’s performance after the second-round Carabao Cup loss and the 40-year-old manager’s future has even been cast in uncertainty.

Rooney insisted that it has become “clear for everyone” that there is “something” off about United after their humiliating result against Grimsby on Wednesday evening.

“Just the way they lost, it was just disheartening,” he continued.

“It’s just… there’s something not right. I think that’s clear.

“I think the man [Amorim] just said that after the game and I think that’s clear for everyone to see that there’s something not right there.”

United are back in action on Saturday afternoon against Burnley at Old Trafford, with the Premier League clash slated for a 3pm kick-off time in the UK.
