Ruben Amorim has sparked a massive reaction from Manchester United fans in the aftermath of the Carabao Cup contest against Grimsby Town at Blundell Park.

The Red Devils’ 2025-26 Carabao Cup campaign started and ended on Wednesday evening, with Ruben Amorim watching his side crash out of the competition.

Charles Vernam opened the scoring for Grimsby Town against Manchester United in the 22nd minute before Tyrell Warren doubled his side’s lead eight minutes later.

United were 2-0 down against Grimsby at half-time before Bryan Mbeumo reduced the deficit after the former Brentford ace’s impact off the bench in the second half.

The Red Devils were handed a lifeline at Blundell Park after Harry Maguire scored a superb bullet header late into the second-round tie and forced the clash to penalties.

However, United were unable to prevent a stunning win for Grimsby on the night, with the League Two side clinching a sensational 12-11 win on penalties.

Man Utd fans responded to Ruben Amorim after the Carabao Cup defeat to Grimsby Town at Blundell Park

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has seen the scrutiny over the Red Devils turn up a notch after Wednesday evening’s Carabao Cup result.

Grimsby Town are through to the third round of the competition and David Artell’s men will now travel away to face Sheffield Wednesday in the Carabao Cup.

Manchester United fans on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, are now fearing that former Sporting CP manager Amorim could walk from Old Trafford.

“That’s what I took from it [Amorim’s post-match interview],” an X user reacted.

Somebody else commented: “I wouldn’t blame him or be upset with him if he did [resign].”

While a third United fan argued: “I want Ineos to be stubborn and back Amorim. Give him a midfielder and [a] goalkeeper. Don’t let him resign.”

“I don’t want Amorim to resign,” another simply said.

While a fifth Red Devils supporter added: “If we lose [and] play badly [in the upcoming matches], I feel Amorim could resign. The players’ attitude last night, especially [in the first] half, was truly disgraceful.”

And a sixth posted: “Ineos should never allow Amorim to resign. Nobody said a rebuild would be easy. Give him a midfielder and [a] goalkeeper and fully trust him. You’re delusional if you think this is about a system or tactics.”

Somebody else tweeted: “Nah, I’m backing Amorim. Sick of changing managers every time; I’m hoping he doesn’t resign and gets us out of this s—.”

Another asked: “What does Amorim stand to gain if he resigns? He’ll only be known as the coward [who] ran away when things got tough. People thinking he’ll resign is beyond hilarious.”

What did Ruben Amorim say after the Grimsby Town match that sparked the noise around his ‘Man Utd resignation?’

Speaking after United’s humiliating defeat, a dejected Amorim apologised to Red Devils supporters and was appalled by his side’s performance against Grimsby.

However, the 40-year-old former Sporting CP manager also insisted that his United players were “talking really loud about what they want” after Wednesday’s result.

“I just want to say sorry to our fans, I have nothing to say any more about the performance,” Amorim said, as per Manchester United’s official website.

“When everything is so important in our club and you try to do everything.

“You have come from pre-season, even Arsenal, you lose the game, but you are there, you are improving and you see the performance, but then reach this kind of game, when everything is so important in our club.

“And when you start a game like this… I think my players are talking really loud about what they want, so I’m really sorry to our fans, I have nothing to say anymore.”

United will now resume their Premier League campaign on Saturday and will host Burnley at Old Trafford, with kick-off for the match slated for 3pm UK time.
