Manchester United only got glimpses of Juan Sebastian Veron’s talent after his huge £28 million move from Lazio.

United sold him too early in 2004, deciding against re-building their side around the Argentine.

Veron still retains affection for United and was this week quizzed about the team’s current predicament.

Veron was speaking to Marca Argentina and says he feels United simply have not recovered from Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure.

Veron said: “They have suffered a lot from Ferguson’s departure, they could not find the way.

“They have had several changes along the way, Manchester City has found a footballing idea and United after Ferguson has struggled to find that idea or sustain it.

“But it’s a big club and I hope that in the future I can see them achieve.

“Mourinho is a great coach who is making his way in Manchester. Possibly, he is the right one, but after such a transcendental figure as Ferguson, he is going to need time.”

Mourinho is in his third season at United and some fans’ patience is already wearing thin. Time is something the manager might not get.

United’s defence is among the worst in the Premier League and many of his signings have failed to work out.

Veron is right that it will need time to get better, but Mourinho’s side have to improve and must achieve a top four finish.
