Donny van de Beek has been ruled out of the Netherlands’ European Championship campaign.

It has been confirmed that the Manchester United midfielder will miss the tournament due to an injury.

Frank de Boer’s side kick off their bid to lift the trophy on Sunday against Ukraine.

Van de Beek won’t be replaced in the squad.

After a tough first season at Old Trafford, van de Beek might have hoped for a strong Euros to get some form and confidence back.

But the injury blow might end up being a blessing in disguise for the midfielder’s United career.

It’s unlikely he’d have been show his very best form this summer anyway. His belief can’t be high and a major tournament is no place to be finding your feet.

Full pre-season the best thing for him

BBC claim it’s a groin injury which has curtained van de Beek’s summer. But provided it isn’t serious, van de Beek should be fit to play a full part in pre-season.

Many other players will return to United after a gruelling summer, which itself comes on the back of a hectic season.

Van de Beek should be rested, recovered and focused to hit the ground running for United.

With senior players returning in dribs and drabs and needing to be managed carefully, van de Beek should be ahead of them in terms of preparation.

That should see him get as many minutes as he requires in pre-season to get up to speed and make a flying start to 2021/22.

Perhaps the injury will put to bed any talk of van de Beek leaving United after just one season, as well.

His only focus should be on getting back fit for United and making his second campaign a major improvement on his first.

The injury blow will hurt now, on the back of a campaign where not much has gone right for van de Beek.

But he can write off 2020/21 now, and come back ready to attack a full pre-season. That may prove to be a major boost to van de Beek’s United career.
