United loanee Di’Shon Bernard could be impacted by manager change

Manchester United likely spend time and resources picking out the right loan deals for their players.

They decided to send defender Di’Shon Bernard to Hull City for the season, and he has been performing impressively in the Championship.

But now, the landscape at the club has completely changed within a matter of days.

Turkish businessman Acun Ilicali completed a £20 million takeover of the Championship club last week.

Ilicali has since sacked Grant McCann, the man who brought Bernard in and replaced him with Shota Alveladze, on a two-and-a-half year deal.

There is no reason that this has to derail his season, given he has been performing impressively and established himself as a starter at the club.

That said, it is a new manager to impress, who will have his own ideas and Bernard must hope that he is as big a part of that as he was under McCann.

That is all part of football but it is the second straight time that Bernard’s loan spell has been impacted by a mid-season managerial change.

Last season, Bernard was on loan in League Two with Salford, who are of course part owned by six former United players.

Richie Wellens was controversially sacked as Salford boss in late March, with Gary Bowyer replacing him and that marked the end of his run in the team.

For United, it was a frustrating reminder of the pitfalls of the loan system in terms of their players dealing with issues which are out of the club’s control.

Bernard will hope that his experience this season is smoother, while United will not want to experience a sense of deja vu.
