United CEO Richard Arnold pictured at The Etihad to watch embarrassing defeat

Manchester United were hammered away at Manchester City in a 4-1 defeat at the weekend.

The one positive perhaps, was that new chief executive Richard Arnold was pictured at The Etihad to watch it all unfold.

Now go and fix it

United’s shortcomings were all too evident. The team were totally outplayed in the second half and managed only 21 per cent possession in the second 45 minutes.

It was a chastening second half to watch, with many players appearing to give up. United just did not have an answer, and the game showed how far ahead City are right now.

After replacing Ed Woodward as CEO in February, this problem is now Richard Arnold’s to go and fix.

Arnold has to get the manager appointment right heading into the summer. United are looking for a permanent successor to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

This match should have underlined that Ralf Rangnick should not be in the running for the position long-term. He is best suited in an upstairs role as an advisor.

United were appalling. Gary Neville ripped into the players on commentary. Owners the Glazers may not be watching, but it is some consolation that Arnold was.

He cannot underestimate the task ahead and the challenge in front of the chief executive. If he fails to get it right, he will be judged a failure like his predecessor.
