Manchester United duo Casemiro and Jonny Evans were both eligible to vote for the Best FIFA Men’s Player at the 2023 Best FIFA Football Awards.
FIFA’s annual award ceremony, which first started in 2017, took place on Monday in London and Inter Miami superstar Lionel Messi took home the top prize on the night.
Messi narrowly edged out Manchester City striker Erling Haaland in the race for the Best FIFA Men’s Player award, with both players scoring 48 points.
FIFA’s rules outlined that the winner was ultimately decided by the player who received the most five-point scores from the men’s national team captains.
The Barcelona legend came out on top ahead of Haaland, with Messi’s former Paris Saint-Germain teammate Kylian Mbappe finishing third with 35 scoring points.
City playmaker Kevin De Bruyne came fourth with 32 points, while Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, who has been linked with United, came fifth with 24 points.
Despite winning a treble with City last season, Haaland faced stiff competition in winning the award after Messi’s World Cup triumph with Argentina in 2022.
Messi beat Haaland to the 2023 Ballon d’Or award, but the Argentina captain fell short of winning UEFA’s Player of the Year award to the City striker.

Casemiro and Evans’ votes at Best FIFA Football Awards
Casemiro and Evans were both able to cast votes at the Best FIFA Football Awards due to their status as captains for Brazil and Northern Ireland respectively.
FIFA’s overall scoring criteria for the awards was based on results from the media, fans, captains and coaches.
Captains voted for their top three picks and a player would receive a score, with first place earning five points, second getting three and third picking up one.
According to FIFA’s official website, United midfielder Casemiro voted for City star Haaland as his first choice, Messi as his second and Mbappe came third.
United defender Evans, on the other hand, picked former Barcelona skipper Messi as his top pick, Mbappe finished second in his rankings and Haaland came third.
Casemiro’s top three picks:
- Erling Haaland (five points)
- Lionel Messi (three points)
- Kylian Mbappe (one point)
Evans’s top three picks:
- Lionel Messi (five points)
- Kylian Mbappe (three points)
- Erling Haaland (one point)
Votes for Andre Onana in Best FIFA Men’s Goalkeeper award
United No 1 Andre Onana, who is now representing Cameroon at the Africa Cup of Nations, was nominated for the Best FIFA Men’s Goalkeeper at the ceremony.
Onana was part of the Ballon d’Or shortlist in 2023 after an impressive campaign with Inter Milan, with the United star playing a key part in their run to the Champions League final.
The 27-year-old former Ajax star left the San Siro and completed a £47.2m move to Old Trafford last summer, with Onana succeeding David de Gea as United’s No 1.
Onana finished fifth in the Best FIFA Men’s Goalkeeper category after scoring only five points, with City No 1 Ederson winning the award with 23 points.
