Turkish press react to Andre Onana performance for Trabzonspor in 3-2 defeat, ‘to the point of outrage’

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana is losing the faith of fans on loan at Trabzonspor.

After departing Manchester United on loan in September, Andre Onana made his debut for Trabzonspor against Fenerbahce. He was praised as a ‘star’ despite their 1-0 loss.

Now in the return Super Lig fixture in February 2026, Onana is under fire in Turkey following Trabzonspor’s 3-2 loss to Fenerbahce. He conceded three goals from three shots on target.

Andre Onana under fire in Turkey

Andre Onana conceded all three shots he faced, while opposition goalkeeper Ederson made six saves for Fenerbahce at the other end.

While Trabzonspor are third in the Super Lig, second place Fenerbahce now have a seven-point advantage ahead of them.

The fallout to Andre Onana’s performance has not been kind, with the goalkeeper failing to live up to high expectations.

Turkish outlet Taka Gazete wrote: “The fact that every shot on target resulted in a goal brought the Trabzonspor fans to the point of outrage.

“Furthermore, Onana’s frequent departures from his goal and risky passing attempts caused considerable anxiety.”

This highlighted how it was more than Onana’s shot-stopping, or lack-of, that has led to the frustration, and there are calls for him to be replaced.

Yenicag report: “The 29-year-old goalkeeper’s recent performance has given fans cause for concern. A large portion of Trabzonspor fans believe Onana should not be played.

“Fans believe that Fatih Tekke should now give young goalkeeper Onur Alp Cevikkan a chance in goal.”

Ajansspor add: “Andre Onana become the target of criticism for his performance,” noting that he “has caused great disappointment, especially with his poor performance in recent weeks.”

Andre Onana unlikely to stay

Andre Onana’s performances are not doing him any favours in Turkey, especially as he is unlikely to stay at Trabzonspor permanently.

Onana will head back to United at the end of the season, leaving the club with a problem trying to offload his wages.

A return to former club Inter Milan has been mooted, but Italian clubs have a reputation for trying to get deals done on the cheap. United may have to settle for another loan move.

Onana will not be heading to the World Cup as Cameroon failed to qualify, which should at least speed along discussions over the goalkeeper’s future.
