Former Watford striker Troy Deeney can only see positives from Manchester United bringing one proven Premier League star to Old Trafford this summer.

Erik ten Hag has seen a huge revamp to his Manchester United first-team squad with the arrival of several new signings and high-profile departures.

The 54-year-old United boss’ new players include the likes of Joshua Zirkzee, Leny Yoro and former Ajax duo Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui.

United have also axed multiple players from Old Trafford this summer, including Mason Greenwood, Willy Kambwala, Donny van de Beek and Aaron Wan-Bissaka,

The Red Devils could see a further sale of players and new arrivals before the summer transfer window shuts on 30th August.

United are on the verge of signing Manuel Ugarte from Paris Saint-Germain, while Scott McTominay is set to leave Old Trafford and complete a move to Napoli.

Deeney backs Man Utd transfer

Speaking on Sky Sports, Troy Deeney has made his feelings clear about Manchester United being linked with out-of-favour Chelsea winger Raheem Sterling.

Raheem Sterling has been frozen out of the Chelsea first team and the Blues star has been deemed surplus to requirements by manager Enzo Maresca.

The 29-year-old winger’s current predicament at Stamford Bridge has opened the door for United to make a potential swoop for Sterling.

According to BBC Sport, United have held ‘exploratory talks’ over a deal to snap up Sterling from Chelsea before the summer window closes.

It is believed that a deal for Sterling’s arrival at Old Trafford could see Jadon Sancho, who has fallen down the pecking order at United, head to Stamford Bridge.

Sterling, who signed for Chelsea in 2022, enjoyed success with Manchester City and lifted four Premier League titles, an FA Cup and five League Cups with the club.

Deeney has now claimed that former Manchester City and Liverpool star Sterling is “better than everything” United have at the moment for wingers.

“He’s better than everything they’ve got there, so yeah,” he said.

“When you come in and you change what they have. At the moment, he’s delivering more than what Marcus [Rashford] is doing.

“He probably gives more of a leadership role to the likes of [Alejandro] Garnacho and Amad [Diallo] who scored on the weekend.”

Former United prospect Demetri Mitchell agrees, writing on X: “Unpopular opinion: sterling is better than anything United already have.”

Deeney on Sterling to Man Utd

Jadon Sancho emerged on the radar of Chelsea after struggling to secure regular playing time under Erik ten Hag in the new season.

Chelsea, on the other hand, want to offload Sterling from their wage bill and United sporting director Dan Ashworth is interested in exploring a deal for the player.

Sterling made 43 appearances across all competitions for Chelsea last season and the Blues winger scored 10 times for the Premier League club.

Deeney has admitted that Sterling’s experience at Manchester City, Liverpool and on the international stage with England could only benefit United players.

“So, those guys will look at Raheem, see that he’s won at [Manchester] City, see what he’s done at Liverpool, see what he’s done at the international stage and go, ‘Right I can learn off that,’” he continued.
