Former England manager Sam Allardyce has now reacted to the bold admission that Manchester United legend Paul Scholes made about Tottenham captain Cristian Romero.

Cristian Romero’s future at the north London club has been in doubt in the 2025-26 Premier League season after his splintered relationship with Thomas Frank.

Thomas Frank was sacked as Tottenham manager last week and Spurs are facing a relegation battle amid the appointment of Igor Tudor as interim head coach.

The uncertainty around Romero left Paul Scholes to make the claim that he would love to bring the 27-year-old Spurs ace to Manchester United if he had the chance.

“Do you know what? I love him. I love watching him play football,” he said on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast.

“He’s p—– off at Spurs, isn’t he? He doesn’t want to be there. He’s having a go at the crowd, he’s having a go at the board, I think his head has checked out a little bit.

“But I would love him at Manchester United. I just love his character.”

Why Sam Allardyce does not see eye to eye with Paul Scholes about Man Utd trying to sign Cristian Romero

Speaking on the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast, Sam Allardyce was told about Paul Scholes’ comments around wanting Cristian Romero at Manchester United.

The 71-year-old former West Ham and Bolton Wanderers manager was asked if he felt that he would take a player like Romero over someone like Harry Maguire.

‘Big Sam’ made his position clear over why he did not agree with United legend Scholes and why he would prefer Harry Maguire over World Cup winner Romero.

“Well, too risky. Too risky. Honestly, too risky,” he said.

“He doesn’t… Listen, if you’re a centre-half, your first priority, in respect to what Paul says, and I respect his opinion, is a defender.

“And how good are you at defending? Not how good are you at playing with the ball?”

Sam Allardyce’s issue with modern defenders amid telling Man Utd to avoid a player like Cristian Romero

Allardyce insisted that Romero is the type of player representative of the defenders that are now emerging in modern football compared with his time as a manager.

“That’s only an added bonus,” he added.

“Well, it’s, well, people are looking for that more than looking at how good they are as defenders, which is a big problem at academy level.

“‘Cause you’ve got all these 30 little coaches going around saying, ‘Can he play out from the back? Can he defend?’ Like full-backs.”

Romero crossed paths with the Red Devils earlier this month and the Argentina international was sent off in Man Utd’s 2-0 win over Tottenham at Old Trafford.

The Spurs defender received a straight red card for his challenge on Casemiro in the first half of Tottenham’s setback to United in the Premier League clash.
