Manchester United are busy behind the scenes preparing to make an announcement on the future of manager Erik ten Hag.

Since the FA Cup Final there has been silence on the future of Erik ten Hag as manager of Manchester United.

Ineos are conducting an internal review, assessing what has gone wrong and right in the 2023/24 season, with a view to deciding whether (a) Erik ten Hag should stay in charge and (b) if not, who should replace him.

The quality of candidates for (b) could lead to a decision on (a) keeping Ten Hag, for now at least, if Ineos are not convinced.

Ineos are holding talks with managers

Ineos are exploring all options as part of their review. This has involved contact with other managers.

And this does not automatically mean Erik ten Hag will be replaced. It simply means the decision-makers are doing their due diligence.

One candidate ruled out of the running following a meeting with Sir Jim Ratcliffe, is Thomas Tuchel, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Another one who won’t be coming is Kieran McKenna, who has renewed his contract with Ipswich Town.

Potential replacements for Erik ten Hag

There are a number of potential replacements for Erik ten Hag still in the running, with three managers named by The Times as contenders.

One is Roberto de Zerbi, out of work since quitting Brighton. Another is Mauricio Pochettino, sacked recently by Chelsea, and the third is Brentford manager Thomas Frank.

Timeline for Erik ten Hag decision

A decision on Erik ten Hag’s future is expected to be made by the end of the current week – prior to Euro 2024 beginning.

This timeline is not fixed and Ineos could move it. However, waiting too long could be seen to waste time

The transfer window officially opens on June 14. Manchester United need to use this window wisely, with numerous incomings and outgoings required, and this manager decision must not delay or overshadow personnel decisions which need making.
