Three reasons Antony will leave Ajax for Manchester United

Manchester United could strike a deal to sign Ajax winger Antony, with Goal Brasil reporting the player’s agents are jetting in to hold talks.

The report states: “The purpose of the trip is to accelerate, and perhaps close, the possible deal between the player and the Manchester club.”

Antony could be a significant signing for United, a player who is already a Brazil international, who would fill the club’s long-problematic right-wing position.

This is an exciting opportunity, and there is plenty of reason to believe Antony will leave Ajax and would jump at the chance to sign with Manchester United.

He wants a new challenge

Antony can say already he has conquered the Eredivisie, playing a key role to helping Ajax win two league titles in the past two years, since his move from Sao Paulo in 2020.

He has scored 22 goals across the past two seasons, adding a further 16 assists. His trickery and unpredictability has been part of the key to Ajax’s success.

But with the Dutch club in transition, Antony is eager to move on. Speaking to De Telegraaf back in February, he admitted his dream is to play in the Premier League.

Still only 22, he is full of confidence and will not want to risk stagnating at Ajax. The reports his agents are jetting to hold talks with Manchester United shows a desire from his end, to make the move happen.

Antony is already part of Brazil’s squad, and a move to Manchester United will help his cause, with the increased profile of the club and the chance to play alongside regular starter for the Selecao, Fred.

Manchester United have a slot available on the right wing for Antony, and he can expect to play a regular starting role right away if he joins.

Joining Erik ten Hag

One of the key attractions for Antony to join Manchester United ahead of other clubs is the chance to work again with manager Erik ten Hag.

Ten Hag is a huge admirer of the winger, signing him for Ajax two years ago and picking him regularly. Antony’s last minute winner against Feyenoord earlier this year ended up being the difference between winning the title and finishing second.

The manager knows how to get the best out of Antony and his trick-laden skillset. Ten Hag praised his character earlier this year, telling Paudal: “I am also happy to have players with [this] temperament. You also need them.”

Ten Hag spoke about how much Ajax missed him when he was out, commenting via FCUpdate: “We all miss him. Without Antony it is all a bit less fast and dynamic on the right, which also makes it more difficult for the team. Then the spaces become a lot smaller.”

Antony will want to go to a club where he is valued, with a manager who understands him. Ten Hag’s presence means there will be no need to think twice. He will jump at the prospect to fulfill his Premier League dream under his former boss.

Ajax are lining up a replacement

One indication Antony will leave Ajax, is the Dutch club’s transfer activity this summer. The Eredivisie champions have just been bidding to sign Antony’s replacement.

An initial offer has gone into Tottenham of £17 million for Steven Bergwijn, a right winger who would replace Antony when he leaves.

The Mail report this first offer was rejected, but Ajax are expected to return with an improved bid, determined to land the winger, who is also keen on the switch.

This shows they are making preparations for Antony to move on, and will be receptive to a strong bid if one comes in, and you can bet Erik ten Hag will be pushing for it.
