Manchester United return from the September international break against Southampton at St Mary’s Stadium.
The 2024/25 season at Manchester United has not been the best start for Erik ten Hag with the Red Devils losing two out of their opening three games in the Premier League.
United’s record at Southampton is certainly an impressive one with the Red Devils yet to lose to the Saints in 14 attempts.
Interestingly, Southampton and United have traded players over the years. In this article, we will look at three players who have made the move to Old Trafford from St Mary’s Stadium plus a key hire in the sporting department.
Danny Wallace

Southampton winger Danny Wallace made 253 appearances for the Saints, scoring 64 goals in the process before his move to Old Trafford.
During his time in the North West of England, Wallace was part of the 1990 FA Cup-winning side under Sir Alex Ferguson, the game that possibly saved his job.
However, Wallace was unfortunate because Lee Sharpe and Ryan Giggs were ahead of him in the pecking order and he decided to leave the club for Birmingham City.
Luke Shaw

During the 2023/24 campaign, Luke Shaw was one of United’s most injured players but before his struggles, the Englishman was one of the most promising left-backs in the country.
The teenager broke through at Southampton before eventually moving to Old Trafford during the summer of 2014 under Louis Van Gaal.
Luke Shaw had a decent debut season before an outstanding start to the 2015/16 season was cut short due to a horrific leg break suffered against PSV Eindhoven in the UEFA Champions League.
Shaw has been so unfortunate with injuries for the Red Devils but this has been the most successful signing United have made from the South Coast club.
Morgan Schneiderlin

After the signing of Shaw, United decided to go to Southampton once again during the summer of 2015 to sign French midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin.
Schneiderlin had established himself as one of the best defensive midfielders in the division but struggled hugely at Old Trafford as he made just 32 appearances in all competitions at United scoring once.
United allowed the Frenchman to move to Everton on a permanent deal. In August of 2024, Schneiderlin announced his retirement from professional football.
Jason Wilcox

It’s not just players that United have signed from the Saints but also directors have been brought to Old Trafford from Southampton.
United confirmed the signing of Wilcox from Southampton in April of 2024 with the Englishman given the role of club director.
United spent a lot of money in the summer of 2024 and Wilcox is a key part of the new recruitment team at Ineos.
When United confirmed the signing of Wilcox, they said: “He will work with all technical areas of the football department to achieve the highest standards of performance”.
Out of all the deals that United have done from Southampton, Wilcox could well turn out to be the most important.
