Thierry Henry can’t believe what he’s seen about Manchester United in the Champions League

Manchester United are out of the Champions League after a dismal group stage showing.

After all that effort to finish in the top four last season, Manchester United are out of the Champions League already.

It wasn’t without its highlights. Rasmus Hojlund showed what he was capable of, with five goals. Harry Maguire scored a winner, while Andre Onana earned that win with a last-minute penalty save.

But this can’t sugarcoat a nightmare of a campaign where defensive collapses, goalkeeping errors, and red cards, all combined to send United crashing out of the competition with just one win.

How Manchester United went out

It’s strange, because in the Premier League, Manchester United have really struggled to score goals with only 18 scored in 16 games.

Yet in the Champions League, Manchester United managed to score 12 goals in just six games.

Remarkably this was the same number as Bayern Munich, who finished first in the group and won ever single game.

This took former Premier League star Thierry Henry aback, on CBS Sports. He said: “I think that’s the first time in Champions League history you score 12 goals and finish bottom, the same goals as the team that finishes top. It’s just shocking.”

Defensive difference

The big difference between Manchester United and Bayern Munich was at the back, where Erik ten Hag’s players leaked goals.

Manchester United conceded 15 goals across the group stage, while Bayern Munich conceded only six.

That is the reason Manchester United crashed out of Europe entirely, while Bayern have gone through as group winners.

Manchester United’s tally of 15 conceded is a record by an English team in the Champions League, giving Erik ten Hag an unwanted place in modern club history.
