United become first English side to do one thing as Red Devils crash out of Champions League

Following Manchester United’s 1-0 defeat to Bayern Munich, a rather concerning fact has emerged that will not please Erik ten Hag.

Kingsley Coman’s brilliant finish past Andre Onana, thanks to a beautiful flick from Harry Kane, won the game for Bayern Munich at Old Trafford and ended Manchester United’s hopes of qualification to the knockout stages of the Champions League.

Erik ten Hag’s United were out of the group stages before the game against Bayern, despite the fact it was still mathematically possible for the Red Devils to qualify.

It was the Red Devils’ defensive struggles throughout the group games that cost United in the end.

United break record

Well, these defensive issues have been laid bare for all to see with TNT Sports claiming that United have become the first side in England to concede 15 goals in the six group games.

After conceding four to Bayern and Copenhagen away, as well as three goals home and away against Galatasaray, the Red Devils have simply not been good enough.

Some of the calamitous goals they have conceded, when they were in control of games, are almost unforgivable. The two they conceded on matchday 1 against Bayern at the Allianz Arena, is the perfect example of these struggles.

United looked better

However, despite all the doom and gloom, Kane, one of the world’s best strikers, barely had a sniff all night until his crucial game-winning assist to Coman.

A defensive duo of Raphael Varane and Harry Maguire worked very well in nullifying the visitor’s threat, which begs the obvious question of why haven’t the pair been given far more chances together this season.

Despite this, Ten Hag looks like he will have to get a result at Anfield without Maguire, who seemed to pull up with a groin problem midway through the first half.

The blueprint for the Dutchman is there though. It does seem highly likely that the defensive pairing for that daunting trip to Anfield will be Jonny Evans and Varane, two stalwarts of the game.
