Manchester United’s starting XI the last time they faced Bayern Munich away now looks completely unrecognisable.
Manchester United travel to Germany to face Bayern Munich to face the Bundesliga champions, in a game that is usually of epic proportions.
However, United fans are heading into this one with no hope whatsoever. The season thus far has been abysmal. A number of bad performances, a sea of injuries and a plethora of problems surrounding the club have many feeling depleted heading into the Champions League opener.
But is it as bad as the last time we went to the Allianz arena? The starting XI from that day suggests otherwise.

Manchester United vs Bayern Munich starting XI in 2014
Flashback to 2014, Manchester United under David Moyes fins themselves in a Champions League quarter-final clash with the German giants.
The clock strikes 7 PM and United’s team is announced.

Looking back now… wow, it wasn’t great.
A team that looks now unrecognizable with not a single player still at the club, United had a number of rogue shouts to face Bayern.
Phil Jones versus Franc Ribery at the time looks like a slight mismatch.
It’s kind of no surprise to see the game end up 3-1 to Munich. This made it 4-2 on aggregate and saw United crash out under Moyes.
However, the game did produce one of the greatest European goals in the club’s history.

Patrice Evra’s stunning strike
The tie remarkably swung in United’s favour in the 57th minute when an unlikely source in Patrice Evra popped up with an absolute thunderbolt to send the Red Devils into ecstasy.
Sadly – this was short-lived. Mario Mandzukic nodded in an equaliser before Thomas Muller’s scuffed finish put Bayern ahead. Arjen Robben then wrapped up the 4-2 aggregate win with a fine solo goal.
Let’s hope for a slightly different result tonight.
