Ten Hag’s new key man thanks manager for ‘faith’ in him, insists squad behind boss

Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay has insisted the squad are fully behind manager Erik ten Hag.

Scott McTominay looked set to leave Manchester United in the summer with West Ham United seeing their £30 million bid for the Scottish midfielder turned down, according to the Manchester Evening News.

Erik ten Hag seemed to shun the academy graduate for the first month of the season but the Dutchman decided to bring McTominay on from the bench against Brentford with Thomas Frank’s side 1-0 up.

The 26-year-old scored twice in stoppage time to rescue a win for the Red Devils and kickstart the midfielder’s season at the club and he has been in the starting line-up pretty much ever since.

McTominay on future

Speaking to the media ahead of the crucial clash against Bayern Munich, the Scottish midfielder was asked just how close he came to leaving United in the summer.

“There is always speculation. It was always a case of working hard. The faith from the manager has been massive for me, it is about repaying him,” McTominay revealed.

As well as this, the Scottish midfielder revealed the squad remains behind the 53-year-old, he said: “It is the player’s responsibility. We know that as well. We have big characters in the dressing room.

“It is not like the other managers when it has been toxic at times. The boys are firmly behind the manager.

“Players can get lost in translation, we just want to do well for the football club. It is as simple as that.”

McTominay could be key

It seems in all likelihood that McTominay is set to start the game against Thomas Tuchel’s Bayern Munich and the Scottish midfielder has to be in top form for the Red Devils.

During the game against Bournemouth, McTominay did not look to be at his best for the Red Devils and struggled to impose himself against the South Coast side.

The 26-year-old has remained inconsistent this season. His performance against Chelsea was brilliant as the Scotsman netted twice against Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

He has to be in top form when the German side comes to visit.
