Diogo Dalot impressed on international duty with Portugal in a very specific role, just as Erik ten Hag would have liked.

Bruno Fernandes stole the show for Portugal in their record 9-0 international win over Luxembourg, with three assists and one goal.

He was not the only Manchester United player to feature, with Diogo Dalot keeping a clean sheet as part of the back four.

The specific role and tactical approach Dalot played in, will be particularly pleasing to Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag.

Diogo Dalot stars at left-back

Diogo Dalot was selected for Portugal at left-back, a role he has had to fulfill in recent games due to injuries to Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.

Dalot performed well, creating one chance, completing three dribbles, blocking one shot and winning three aerial duels. It was a complete performance on both sides of the ball.

The way he played, was just the way Ten Hag would want, tucking into an inverted role and joining the midfield at times.

This was explained by teammate Danilo, who told A Bola: “The manager asked our left-back, in this case Diogo Dalot , to play a little inside when we were at a higher stage.”

Erik ten Hag looks for his full-back to get involved centrally. Dalot touched the ball 85 times in total, even attempting one shot at goal from just outside the penalty box.

Ten Hag has decision to make

Diogo Dalot is not the only option Manchester United have at left-back, after the deadline day loan signing of Sergio Reguilon.

Erik ten Hag will have to choose between the two, when United host Brighton at the weekend, and then visit Bayern Munich days later.

Dalot, who signed for United for £19 million in 2018, is expected to retain his place. Getting some practice in at left-back over the international break only makes it more likely.
